Michael has spent four years as a solicitor (1976-1980), one year as Associate to a High Court Justice; another year as a barrister with the Victorian Bar, and six years as Chief of Staff to a Federal Minister (1983-1988). He has practiced at the Victorian Bar since 1988.
Michael has also been on the Board of Directors of Australia Post (1988-1995), a Commissioner at the Australian Film Commission (1995-1998), and a Member of the Monash University Information and Communication Technology Centre (MONICT) Advisory Board (1989-1991.)
