Brendan is an experienced criminal defence lawyer. In the four years prior to being called to the Victorian Bar, he practiced extensively in the criminal jurisdiction of the Magistrates' Court and the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory with Aboriginal Legal Aid, operating exclusively as defence advocate.
Over this time Brendan was also engaged on a full-time basis at Deakin University (Geelong Campus) where he conducted lectures and seminars, principally in the areas of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure and Evidence. He has also worked as a full-time lecturer at Charles Darwin University (then NTU) in the area of "Indigenous Knowledge Systems" in the Faculty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, and Academic Support Lecturer in the Law Faculty NTU.
During 2003 Brendan worked as a Human Rights Lawyer in Sydney.
Having worked at commercial law firm Ward Keller, a top tier firm in Darwin, Brendan is also well versed in commercial matters.
